Motzfeldt tantalum property is located in southern Greenland and it was the original exploration project undertaken by the Company in 2000 and covering licence 2000/5 of 414 km2 (Now reduced to 84 km2).
It was the subject of an extensive exploration programme in 2001 and 2002 including 1,622m of diamond drilling and resulted in independent consultants Behre Dolbear concluding that “A ‘preliminary’ resource of 15 million tonnes with an average grade of in excess of 500 ppm Ta2O5 and 6,000 ppm Nb2O5 is a wholly realistic target that is likely to be achieved.”
This size and grade puts Motzfeldt among the world class deposits of tantalum. According to the independent research organization Roskill, based in London, this deposit ranks 7th in the world when measured by the size of the resource and third in terms of grade. Most currently exploited tantalum ores grade below 300 ppm (parts per million).
Tantalum is mainly used for electric capacitors for miniature electronic
devices, particularly3Gmobile phones. The second significant application
is in special alloys. Cabot Corporation, one of
the world’s two major consumers of the metal is one of the
main shareholders of Angus & Ross
and holds 4.52% of the stock.
In 2005-2006 field season Angus & Ross plc is conducting further exploration of this deposit with assistance of geologists from St Andrews University, Scotland.
